The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Mathematics subject consists of a compulsory part and an extended part. The compulsory part aims to assess students’ understanding of basic mathematical content, concepts, techniques, and principles, as well as their ability to use mathematical symbols, solve problems, and communicate arguments mathematically. Students can choose to take only the compulsory part or, based on that, select one of the two extended modules: Module 1 (Calculus and Statistics) or Module 2 (Algebra and Calculus).
The exam includes two papers for the compulsory part. Paper 1 (Traditional Questions) accounts for 65% of the total score with a duration of about 2 hours 15 minutes and includes basic and more challenging questions in two parts. Paper 2 (Multiple Choice) accounts for 35% of the total score with a duration of about 1 hour 15 minutes, covering basic and non-basic content. The extended part, whether Module 1 or Module 2, consists of a single paper lasting about 2 hours 30 minutes, divided into short and long questions, requiring comprehensive mastery of relevant concepts and skills.
For revision, students should consolidate fundamental mathematical concepts and familiarize themselves with the scope of both compulsory and extended parts. Practicing past papers and mock exams can improve problem-solving speed and accuracy. Emphasis should be placed on developing logical reasoning, calculation skills, and application ability, as well as familiarity with using calculators and graphing devices. Targeted training is recommended for extended topics such as calculus, statistics, and algebra. Systematic organization of formulas and typical question types, along with continuous practice and error analysis, will help achieve flexible application of mathematical knowledge.
