The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Physics consists of a compulsory part and an elective part. The compulsory part covers five major topics: heat and gases, force and motion, waves, electricity and magnetism, and radioactivity and nuclear energy, accounting for 60% of the total score. The elective part includes four modules, from which students select two, covering topics such as astronomy and space science, atomic physics, energy and energy use, and medical physics, accounting for 20%. Additionally, the School-Based Assessment (SBA) contributes 20%, evaluating students’ experimental and investigative skills.
The exam has two papers. Paper 1 is divided into Section A (multiple-choice questions, 21%) and Section B (short, structured, and essay questions, 39%), lasting about 2 hours and 30 minutes, covering the compulsory part. Paper 2 includes multiple-choice and structured questions on elective modules, with students answering two modules, accounting for 20% and lasting about 1 hour.
For revision, students should solidify mastery of fundamental concepts and formulas, especially in mechanics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetism. Hands-on experimental practice is important to cultivate observation and data analysis skills. Thorough textbook study and extensive practice with past papers enhance understanding and exam techniques. Effective use of diagrams and calculators assists problem solving, and mock exams build exam confidence. For the elective modules, in-depth study and understanding of relevant theories and applications are necessary.
