The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) English exam consists of public examinations and school-based assessment (SBA). The public exam includes four papers: Paper 1 Reading (20%, 1.5 hours), Paper 2 Writing (25%, 2 hours), Paper 3 Listening and Integrated Skills (30%, about 2 hours), and Paper 4 Speaking (10%, about 20 minutes, including group discussion and individual responses). The SBA accounts for 15% and involves activities such as reading/viewing, film reports, group discussions, and individual presentations.
The Reading paper includes various texts of different lengths and difficulty levels, with multiple-choice, short answer, and extended open-ended questions. The Writing paper has two parts: Part A is a short guided writing task of about 200 words, and Part B is a longer, open-ended essay of about 400 words with a choice of questions. The Listening paper has multiple sections, including compulsory and optional parts, with tasks integrating listening, reading, and writing. The Speaking paper assesses oral communication skills through structured interaction.
For revision, students are advised to practice a wide range of reading materials to build vocabulary and analytical skills. Writing practice should focus on structure, clear expression, and vocabulary variety, especially adjectives and connectors. Listening and speaking practice should involve daily and academic conversations to master answering techniques and fluency. Regular practice with past papers and mock exams helps familiarize students with the exam format and improves confidence. During SBA, students should participate actively in discussions and presentations to enhance oral communication and interaction skills, achieving overall improvement in English proficiency.
