The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) Biology subject is an elective science course designed to help students understand the basic principles of biology, life phenomena, and their relationships with humans and the environment. The curriculum covers various topics including cell structure and function, genetics and evolution, ecology, human physiology, microbiology and immunology, and plant physiology. This subject emphasizes conceptual understanding, scientific inquiry skills, and the ability to apply knowledge to real-life situations. It is suitable for students aspiring to pursue careers in medicine, life sciences, environmental protection, and related fields.
The HKDSE Biology examination consists of two written papers. Paper 1 is compulsory and accounts for 60% of the total score; it includes multiple-choice questions and structured questions covering the entire syllabus, with an examination time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. Paper 2 is elective and accounts for the remaining 40%; students select two questions from several options. This paper assesses students' higher-order thinking skills, explanatory abilities, and knowledge application, with a duration of 1 hour. Starting from 2024, the practical component will be assessed through written examinations, and students are no longer required to complete School-based Assessment (SBA).
For revision, students should first consolidate their foundational knowledge, ensuring they understand the core concepts of each topic, especially frequently tested physiological mechanisms such as respiration, photosynthesis, genetic laws, and body system functions. Regularly reviewing notes and organizing key diagrams and flowcharts can aid visual memory. Practicing a large number of exercises and past papers helps familiarize students with question types and answering techniques, especially the logic and precise wording required for structured questions. Additionally, using resources beyond textbooks, such as mock exams, instructional videos, and real-life application examples, can deepen understanding of abstract concepts.
