The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) Economics subject is an elective social science course aimed at cultivating students’ understanding of economic activities and enabling them to grasp fundamental concepts such as market operations, the role of government, international trade, and macroeconomics. The curriculum is divided into two main parts: microeconomics (covering demand and supply, price mechanisms, market structures) and macroeconomics (including national income, inflation, unemployment, fiscal and monetary policy, and foreign trade). The HKDSE Economics examination includes two written papers. Paper 1 is compulsory, accounting for 60% of the total score, with a duration of 2 hours. It features data-response and short-answer questions that primarily assess students’ understanding and application of core syllabus knowledge. Paper 2 accounts for 40% of the total score and lasts 1 hour; candidates select two essay questions from several options. For revision, students should focus on conceptual understanding and developing graphical analysis skills. It is recommended to organize concept maps and economic models (such as demand and supply graphs, price level and output curves) to aid visual comprehension. Practicing past papers is essential to familiarize with common question types and master answering techniques, especially how to use case studies and apply theories to explain real-world economic issues. Additionally, regularly reading current news on topics like inflation, interest rate changes, and government fiscal policies helps connect classroom knowledge with real situations, enhancing depth and persuasiveness in answers.
